a Suede fan, really? Where’s your husband from? I’ve met very few Americans who know who Suede are (I shouldn’t assume he’s American, just stating that for now, haha)
Okay, got it. I need to know more though, you have no idea how excited I get to meet fellow Suede fans - do you like them? What’s his favourite song or album? Have either of you seen them live?
I think you just made his day. He has seen them twice and the first time their equipment was stolen, so they had to play an all acoustic set. He says he has no favorites because every album and song is a masterpiece 🤣 I said I'd connect you two. He's 2D on here (posts less frequently).
This gets better and better - I also saw them on the tour where, supposedly, their instruments were stolen. I believe this was in May 1997 in Boston when I saw them on back-to-back nights. The first night, Saturday, was a regular show and my girlfriend and I at the time actually saw the band eating pizza earlier in the day across from the venue, and I totally chickened out and froze in front of them (and stupidly took a photo of their table after they'd left, it was a mess).
Then on the Sunday, with two friends, there was a sign saying their equipment had been stolen and that might've been one of their best shows, if not the very best (I've seen them about 20 times). There were rumours later on that their equipment was fine and they just wanted to try out a few acoustic shows. Either way, they were brilliant that night (and I also lit the cigarette of the lead singer of Longpigs, their support act, when he asked for a light.)
This is such a great interview! I'm already feeling wiser, and also reassured it's not just me who feels like "growing up" is something I still haven't figured out how to do. Well done, both! ❤️
What a lovely interview, Daniel, and I love your advice to younger people. It's also alerted me to Suede. I must shame-facedly confess that, since you'd mentioned Britpop, I first read that as the 1970s glam rock band Sweet and somewhat clutched at my pearls ... then I took a second look and felt suitably chastened. I must go and listen to some Suede now ...
Thank you Gabrielle, I’ve realised since that interview that there are a few more useful nuggets I could share with the younger generation but alas…my memory is declining in my advancing years 😂
Let me know how you get on with Suede - I can put a playlist together if you like of my favourite songs, another reader is also interested in that 🤗
Haha I see Suede is getting a mention here from Daniel! Lovely interview and I ask myself the same questions why did I move to X country when I was younger. Seemed like a good idea at the time…
A lot of things seemed like a good idea at the time!
What will it take for you to appreciate or get into Suede? Should I make a playlist for you or simply recommend an album? How about you recommend something for me to listen to in return?
Yes so many things seemed a good idea and its weird to try to tell other people that they were not such a great idea because they think that must have been great… but weighing it up it was some good and some less good and you are not quite sure now of the balance.
open to the playlist or the album... I feel we need to find something you need equally persuaded about to listen to in return….
Thank you so much for profiling me, Lou! 🤗 Glad my world-weary, disdainful and direct snarky style is something you've grown to appreciate 😉😂
It was a "love-at-first-read" kind of a thing 😂
“By all means, make plans… but don’t stick to them.”
That’s some choice life advice right there. Patch Adams was a cool commencement speaker, but I would’ve done better with that single nugget of wisdom.
this is the kind of advice that would have given me hives in my 20s and 30s. but I'm learning to embrace it now! never too late!
100% agree. Which is both why we needed it back then and why we absolutely would not have taken it. 🤣
“Read a lot and stay in touch with the humanities. Don’t get swallowed up in devices and screens.” Very good reminder! 🔥❤️
The most adult I feel is buying mundane things like refrigerators. Or deciding the dinner menu consists of ice cream.
My husband is also a huge Suede fan. I... wouldn't have known who they were without him 🤣

He’s American. But he worked in a record store for several years 🙂

Wow, what memories...
My husband had 9 billion responses and questions. I told him he should just talk to you 🤣

part of me wonders if we ever really figure it out 😊. Cheers, Marci!
This is a good advice not only for young people but also for those who are 67 as me.
Totally agree, Olga! Cheers
I loved this ❤️ And you got “wee“ in there! Also, what are pegged jeans? 🤔
Always need to sneak ‘wee’ wherever we can 😉
From Wikihow: “Pegged jeans/trousers are regular jeans that have been folded up to create a hemmed look, popular in the late 80s and early 90s.”
I’m not sure that explains it very clearly though.
I think I need a visual. Do you have a pic of you wearing a pair??
Good heavens, no!
Actually, I probably do, but who knows where it is, stored safely away in a box somewhere with my parents, out of harm’s way.
I do have plenty of photos of other ridiculous fashion faux pas but this was WAY before the era of digital cameras, thankfully 😂
Fun interview! Daniel, I don’t have much (anything ?!) figured out either. Just pottering along, all in a middle!!
same here, Francesca!
I think it’s probably for the best, don’t you?
